Roy Saunders had a Club Guard of Honour

"Roy's funeral was met with a club guard of honour at his house for the funeral procession.
It was amazing to see over 40 members turn out to mark his life in this way with 3 club representatives able to attend the actual service. The remainder watched a live online feed of the service on the club screen.
Then we had drinks at the club to celebrate a wonderful friend, volunteer, member and his family."

Dear all,

I’m sure that you are all now aware of the sad news that Roy Saunders, our former fixtures secretary has died quite unexpectedly this week. He has been in hospital for many weeks but went home last week with the hope that he would gradually improve. Unfortunately that was not to be and his daughter, Dawn, phoned to give us the bad news.

I doubt if I need to remind you how much Roy has done for our club over the years and in my view it is doubtful that we would have got amateur rugby back in its feet in the way that we have without Roy’s input and support. For many years he really was the man that made sure that we could play our matches and was the one who looked after the changing rooms, the players and the refs. We owe him a huge debt of gratitude. Many of the current crop of players will not realise what a huge contribution he has made to the club.

We would like to find an appropriate way in which to honour Roy – some kind of lasting legacy that in some way represents our thanks to him and recognises how much he gave to us. I wonder, therefore, if you could all give this matter some thought, maybe discuss it and then make some suggestions as to what we could or should do. In the meantime, it might be helpful to have some of your thoughts about and memories of Roy and what he has done for the club so that we can record these and pass them on to his family in the hope that it provides some comfort and at least demonstrates how grateful we are to him.

Kind regards

Jim Goodman
