There was much excitement tinged with a few nerves as the girls arrived at The Bob Coward Memorial Ground for our first pool game in the Girls National Cup Competition against Barkers Butts. We had a fantastic team of girls from Worcester, Shropshire and Oswestry who have clustered together this season to combat the lower numbers in U18’s that have come about from the age grade changes. The training and games they have played so far this season have seen them gel together as if they been a team forever.

The weather was perfect and the girls were really focused as they started their warm up and pre game training session and this continued as the game got underway against a well drilled and very determined opposition.

The spectators were treated to a really exciting game of rugby as both teams gave it their all but Worcester were the first to put points on the score board. This really was a game that kept on giving. In the words of Coach Tom, Worcester were a team with buckets of self belief and team work, whilst they were visibly enjoying themselves.

All of our girls should be extremely proud of themselves. Their performance both on and off the pitch was awesome. They all played with commitment, determination and skill. The game was fast paced with both teams having players that Usain Bolt would have struggled to have kept up with. The tackling was immense, the scrums solid, the rucking and mauling pure poetry and the try scoring and conversions exciting. But above all, the teamwork and enjoyment that radiated from these girls was just blooming perfect.

A big thank you has to go to Steve, Tom, Danny and Aleki for their fantastic coaching, Hattie for her speedy first aid skills, James for his David Bailey impersonation and to our team managers.

But an even bigger thank you goes to the girls for showing everyone watching, the meaning of being part of a team and for making us all smile.

We have Old Hales next in the last game of the pool stages and are looking forward to more training and games in preparation for what promises to be another exciting game.

And just to finish with some more wise words from Coach Tom,

“A cracking shift from you all; the sky’s the limit girls.
