Worcester 31 - 29 Sutton

Worcester played their first home game under lights of the season and managed to scrape a last minute win. The game did not start well for Worcester, who within 34 seconds found themselves a try down after not claiming the kick off and some clever enterprising play by the Sutton 10. Worcester managed to get themselves some possession and get into the game but were still not making incursions into the Sutton half with much play being between the two 10 meter lines. Pressure was often lost due to an error or a penalty offence. It took a second try from Sutton to put Worcester 12 – 0 down to kick start them into playing with more intensity. The first Try for Worcester came from full back will Carroll who tonight scored three very impressive tries beating many players on his way to the try line. His try was the catalyst for a period of 19 unanswered points. The half did finish with Worcester stoically defending their line and keeping Sutton at bay to end the half 19-12.

The second half saw both teams struggling to keep possession for long enough to put the opposition under consistent pressure but Worcester found themselves on the back foot after a line out was won by Sutton on the Worcester five metre line and then the ball was spread across the pitch for them to score in the corner. This saw a purple patch for Sutton which meant that they went into the lead 26-19. Sutton were able to extend the lead with a penalty so Worcester there facing the last 10 minutes of the game with a deficit to overcome, but man of the match Joe Murcott managed to go over for a well deserved try showing strength and determination which brought the scores to 29-24. It looked like it may not be Worcesters night, as many attacks came to nothing, but in the final seconds Will Carroll get his 3 and most decisive try to give Alex Crawshaw a kick to win the game. Crawshaw held his nerve and his kick sailed through the uprights to give a 31-29 win to Worcester. Tonight’s win was well deserved, it give the team somethings to build on in the weeks to come. We did see two debuts tonight in a returning Colt Thomas Hughes who returned to playing after his time at University and the 2nd debutant was Ben Ward who is studying at the University. Both players fitted in well to the team

It was great to get a win after some challenging weeks and we hope momentum goes forward with us in to our away game at Ludlow.
